Sofia Goggia made history for Italy in Pyeongchang-2018 by becoming the first female skier in her country to win the Olympic gold in the reign of the women’s category.

The American Lindsey Vonn had to settle for bronze in his farewell to his favorite test in the Games, in a fateful day for his country, as the men’s ice hockey team was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Czech Republic.

Goggia, 25, who confirmed to be the best this season in Descent (leads the World Cup of the specialty), beat the Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel (silver) by 9 hundredths, and Vonn by 47.

The American announced at the end of the test that the Pyeongchang was her last Olympic Descent.

The American queen of speed remains for the moment with only one Olympic gold medal, won in 2010 in Vancouver. An injury deprived him of participating in the Sochi-2014 Games.

After his sixth position in the Super-G of Pyeongchang, Vonn will still have one last chance to climb to an Olympic podium, on Thursday in the Combined. Although his compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin, 22, is the big favorite for gold.

– Excitement in goodbye –

“I feel very excited because this will undoubtedly be my last Olympic descent … Of course I will miss the Olympic Games,” said the American.

Vonn, 33, who has 81 victories in the World Cup, 5 of the record held by the Swedish Ingemar Stenmark, won this Wednesday his third Olympic medal, after gold in Descent and bronze in Super-G, both in Vancouver-2010.

“My body makes me suffer, I’m lucky enough to be able to ski and be on the podium in this last Descent in the Games,” added Vonn, whom Goggia described as “the greatest skier in history.”

Nicknamed ‘cavallo matto’ (crazy horse) for his extreme way of sliding on the boards, oblivious to the risk entailed by his specialty, Goggia joined his name to that of his compatriot Zeno Coló as the only Italian who had won the reign in an Olympic Games (Oslo-1952).

“Today I made a solid career, without fail, which is not guaranteed with me,” acknowledged the Italian winner.

“I had faith in myself, I respect the others but in the front door I only think of myself, I concentrated on the curve after the curve,” explained the Bergamo skier, who was prevented by an error in the Super-G for the medals.

– Norway also makes history –

The Norwegian Mowinckel became the first skier in her country to hang two metals in the same edition of the Winter Games.

The 25-year-old, who has exploded this season, had already taken the silver in the Giant, behind the American Mikaela Shiffrin.

For its part, the United States, which had finished on the podium the last two Olympic hockey tournaments, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Czech Republic (2-2, 1-0 in penalties).

Without the players of the prestigious NHL, the American cash is made up of university students and veterans who have already abandoned the North American championship.

The Americans had been finalists in Vancouver-2010, and semifinalists in Sochi-2014.

On the other hand, Russian skaters under the Olympic flag took the top two positions of the short program of women’s figure skating, with Alina Zagitova, 15, with a new world record (82.92 points), and the double world champion Evgenia Medvedeva (81.61), of 18.
